CARE emergency distribution truck during an extreme cold period in 2008 that caused fuel and food shortages.
CARE has been working in Tajikistan since 1994, on emergency relief, rehabilitation and long-term projects.
Environmental Protection
Tajikistan is an area of globally significant biodiversity and CARE is working to improve conservation in the country. We work with local partners on new mechanisms for effective management of natural resources.
Sexual health
CARE is working to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services for young people.
CARE focuses on youth-friendly clinics and counseling services; individual education, and more open, youth friendly policies on sexual and reproductive health.
Food Security
CARE works with partners to decrease chronic food insecurity in the region.
We focus on maternal and child nutrition, improving availablity of healthy food in a sustainable way, and relevant eduation on dietary requirements and farming practices.
Emergency Response and Disaster Risk Reduction
CARE helps community organisations and schools organise to protect their communities from future disasters.
We aim to help people be more resiliant through better management of natural resources. We also provide the training and tools required for communities to be prepared: early warning systems, evacuation plans and practices and general awareness. Women, children and other vulnerable groups are encouraged to participate.
In early 2008, an energy crisis combined with the harshest winter in 30 years left millions of people in Tajikistan without food, heat or water in temperatures that dropped to -25C at night.
CARE provided cash transfers, food, warm clothing, coal, generators, fuel, and medicine.
CARE targeted the most vulnerable, distributing emergency relief to farmers, women heads of household, schools, homes for the elderly, orphanages, nurseries, and homes for disabled children.
