Democracy, governance and social inclusion
CARE supports local organisations in the western highlands of Guatemala interested in participating in and leading democratic and development processes in their communities.
The support we offer includes helping local organisations to obtain legal status and local people to become registered and regain legal identity documents which have often been lost in the civil war. We help communities to become familiar with laws and frameworks that influence democracy and development processes to enable them to participate.
Helping children get a good education
CARE works to increase the attendance of girls at primary school. We enable mothers to access micro-credit to sustain and expand their economic activities which contributes to increased household income, rather than sending girls to work. This enables their daughters to attend school.
We also collaborate with the Ministry of Education and local Parent-Teacher Associations to develop an appropriate bi-lingual, multi-cultural curriculum and strengthen the overall quality of primary education.
