Girls' education project in Egypt. © CARE / Josh Estey.CARE has worked in Egypt for more than fifty years.
When we first started, we focused exclusively on providing food to starving people.
We distributed food to schoolchildren as part of a nationwide programme from 1954 to 1967 and ran large-scale food distribution for Sinai Bedouin from 1977 to 1986.
We continue to provide nutritional support and distribute food when communities are unable to meet their own needs, but the scope of our activities has expanded to include long-term development initiatives.
Education for girls
More than half of Egypt’s women do not know how to read and write, compared to one-third of men. We are working to increase the number of girls in school in Egypt, as well as to improve the overall quality of education.
CARE is building schools, training teachers and raising awareness about the importance of girls’ education.
Strengthening communities
We aim to strengthen community-based organisations and make sure that local communities are able to make their voices heard by government officials and development agencies alike.
We assist poor communities so that they take part in decision-making when it comes to managing water and other resources.
